When you hear "portable car lifts", you probably hear "unsafe car lifts", too. The truth is that a portable autolift can actually be just as safe as any other. Most of these portable lifts will manage anywhere up to a couple tons, with others reaching up to three tons, and will usually be in the "low rise" category, meaning that they'll get the car a few feet off the ground, but they won't lift it six feet into the air.
These lifts really are a necessity for any DIY auto projects, though. When you want to repair or replace a car's suspension, when you want to buy some new race wheels to attach to the car, it's a lot easier and a lot safer to use a lift than it is to try and jack the car up and put it on cinder blocks.
Now, it's absolutely necessary that you look for a lift that is free standing. If it needs to be mounted somewhere, if it can't be operated without a concrete garage floor, then it's not doing you much good as far as portable car lifts go (the keyword there being, of course, "portable").
When it comes to hydraulics based lifts, portable lifts can be incredibly strong and very durable. However, safety still needs to be considered. When using a low rise, free standing lift, make sure that you are using it on sturdy, solid ground. It's not a good idea to get underneath a car being supported by a lift that's standing on grass. It might crack a plumbing pipe underneath and collapse entirely. It might simply slip. Putting the lift on tarmac or on concrete is your best bet.
You should also make sure to only erect the lift on solid ground. If you try to erect it on your driveway, it's simply not going to support your car, and might cause some major damage or even major injury before you've even grabbed your toolbox.
Portable car lifts can be as safe as any other type of lift, but you have to be extra cautious with them. A mounted lift is permanently mounted in a safe spot, but a portable lift is a potential hazard every time you set it up in a new place. Just make sure that you know what you're doing. Read the instructions, read the manual, and be safe.
